THE WITCHER - ENHANCED EDITION Rip For PC

THE WITCHER - ENHANCED EDITION Rip For PC

UK, March 1, 2007 - As you'll know if you've been following IGN's previous coverage, The Witcher is a classic-style RPG that's been created using BioWare's Aurora engine. It's being developed out of Poland and it's set in a universe created in a series of best-selling novels by fantasy writer Andrzej Sapkowski. You may not have heard of Mr Sapkowski, or his work (three short story collections and five novels), but his stories are a pretty big deal in his native Poland and they've been translated into Czech, Slovak, German, Russian, Lithuanian, French and Spanish. And they're set to arrive in the UK with a translation of The Last Wish short story collection in April. The game based on his books is also a pretty big deal, for Polish developer CD Projekt, at least. Having established itself as a leading distributor in Eastern Europe, the company is now branching out and The Witcher is the company's first internally developed game. Which is why it has gathered together 38 journalists from 13 countries to tell us a little bit more about the game, and to give us a chance to get our hands on the latest demo.

During the opening presentation, the chaps at CD Projekt are keen to emphasise three main elements: "We want to create a game that has three outstanding elements," says Michal Madej, the game's chief designer. "First of all is the main hero; the second thing is the story; and the last thing is the combat. We have a very unusual hero. He is a professional monster-slayer - a kind of medieval hitman - and also one of the most famous characters in the world. The second thing is the story, which is set in a very unique fantasy setting - a modern fantasy, and not typical cliché or Tolkien-like fantasy. And the last thing is our combat system. We were able to create a combat system that features dynamic action, lots of motion-capture work and lots of tactical choices, but everything is controlled very easily."The first of those three main elements, then, is Geralt of Rivia, also known as the White Wolf: a white-haired 'witcher' - a renowned and roaming monster hunter, blessed with unnatural powers, supreme sword skills and superhuman strength and reflexes. Faithful to the character described in the books, he's a reluctant hero, hard-boiled, and at home with magic and alchemy as he is with slicing his enemies with his dual-wielded swords. With his white hair, cat's eyes and a succession of battle scars, it's little wonder that he's viewed with a degree of mistrust by the majority of civilians in the game world. As with any self-respecting RPG, it's possible to customise his skills over the course of the game: there are over 250 special abilities to acquire, but one interesting dimension is that it's not possible to acquire all of them. Thus, players will have to specialise at some point, which Madej hopes will enhance the game's replay value. Not that the game needs much replay value: the main story consists of three plot lines made up of 100 quests that, the developer reckons, will take up to 30 hours to complete, and there is even an additional 50 hours of sub-quests. No wonder that the game contains an estimated 2,000 pages of dialogue. The story takes place, as CD Projekt is keen to stress, in a fantasy setting with a twist. There are no moral black and whites here, just shades of grey, in the embers of an empire defeated by invaders from the north, which has left scorched lands and decimated peoples in their wake. Consequently, race relations are problematic at best, and the moral ambiguities of the world are heightened by problems such as terrorism, pollution and genocide. It's even possible to gamble, with accurately modelled dice. Many of the NPCs that players will come across in the game are faithfully drawn from the pages of the books, such as Dandelion, Geralt's bardic companion, but there will also be the usual variety of vendors, as well as exotic monsters and human foes for Geralt to do battle with. As CD Projekt demonstrates with the opening movie, the story starts with Geralt having lost his memory, and an attack on the Witcher HQ, an impressively rendered ruined castle. As it continues, so does the sense of moral confusion with various different factions to ally with and three different endings. What's more, the developer is keen to stress that your choices resonate in the long-term: it's not possible, as it is in some games, to simply decide whether to be good or bad at the climax of the game.
One example of the game's realistic approach to fantasy is the use of potions. Although Geralt can create these using herbs and ingredients, their use is double-edged, with potential benefits, such as night vision, or swiftness, balanced by the drawback that they also poison him - causing loss of consciousness or blindness for example. Which provides a neat segue to the game's combat system. It's been in development for one and a half years, and boasts over 200 motion-captured animations with the help of movie stuntmen (who appear later in the evening to provide the entertainment for the gathered journalists by setting fire to themselves in the snow). To add even more authenticity, the combat moves have been inspired by medieval manuscripts, and they feature wire-work to reflect the superhuman abilities of the witchers. The 'tactically-deep real-time combat' system (as CD Projekt describes it) is based on six different combat styles, upgradeable weapons and several magical powers, including a telekinetic blast, defensive shield and a flame strike, and attacks can be chained together to create combos, or finishing moves. The next stage of the presentation - a hands -on session with a demo of the game, provides an opportunity to take a closer look. More importantly, it demonstrates how far BioWare's Aurora engine has come in CD Projekt's hands, since the game's isometric visuals are undeniably good looking.
